YMCA

The YMCA of Western Ontario was established in November 1856 as the seventh YMCA in Canada, and our YMCA has a history of service and deep roots in the London and area community. From providing physical fitness services in 1890, opening the Queen's and Wellington branch in 1896, buying Camp Queen Elizabeth for a "buck and a bible" in 1954, expanding service with the Bob Hayward Branch in 1963, and moving in 1983 to a new downtown Centre Branch on Waterloo after fire destroyed the old facility, the YMCA has progressed and kept pace with a growing and dynamic community.

We have grown to include three fitness centres in London, one in Strathroy, one in Woodstock and most recently, one in St. Thomas, that offer new and innovative programs and state-of-the-art equipment second to none. With over 25 programs in London, Middlesex, Oxford and Elgin counties, the YMCA Child Care Department ensures that each child receives individual attention in a safe, healthy and stimulating environment that encourages them to develop their spirit, mind and body. We operate the Children's Safety Village where we provide enhanced programming through synergy with our Camping and Outdoor Education programs for Children and Youth. Educational Services helps youth and adults discover the career path that is right for them. LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) and FPSYIP (Federal Public Sector Youth Internship Program) help people gain the experience, skills and confidence needed to live happy and productive lives. Our Youth Gambling Program is a prevention and education program designed to reduce the harm associated with youth gambling.

The face of the our YMCA has evolved and grown through its changing membership and programming, but the mission of the YMCA "to provide opportunities for personal growth in spirit, mind and body for all people of all backgrounds, beliefs and abilities" has remained an enduring foundation and focal point for this charitable organization. In 2008, 69,767 people participated in our programs. Be one of them! Come and "Rediscover Your Y"!
